Stretching from the beautiful Marishki Lakes in the Rila Mountain all the way to the Aegean sea, Maritsa is the longest river on the Balkan peninsula and one of the symbols of Plovdiv depicted on its coat of arms. The 321.6 km of its length that are located within the borders of Bulgaria mark it as the fourth longest in the country.
