One of the oldest cultural institutions in Bulgaria, the Plovdiv Regional Archeological Museum was officially founded in 1882 and placed inside its current building after its construction in 1886. It contains nearly 100,000 exhibits consisting of objects from the Paleolithic Era to the 15th century. The museum is divided into 7 departments – Prehistoric art, Thracian art, Ancient Greek art, Ancient art, Medieval art, Renaissance art, Numismatic collection. Included in the museum fund is the famous Panagyurishte Treasure – a replica of the treasure is on display (the original is kept in a vault in the capital). The archeological museum has its own library containing 13 000 volumes.
