The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo, carved directly into the side of a mountain, are one of the most stunning landmarks in Bulgaria, and rightfully recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their unique wall frescoes. The UNESCO protected Boyana Church, built all the way in the 10th century, is famous for its stunning collection of over 240 wall frescoes. The Old Town of Nessebar – also under the protection of UNESCO - is home to 13 churches dating back to as far back as the 4th century.
